IAEA 2019 Baku, Azerbaijan | Measuring potential: the use of assessments in selection decisions
Gwendydd Caudwell, Head of Test Development and Delivery
Amirulla Abdullaev, Head of Presidential Schools Project, Ministry of Public Education, Uzbekistan
The competition for places at top universities and schools is extremely high. Admissions officers face dilemmas on how to select students when all of them achieve the highest grades at school. IAEA 2019 Baku, Azerbaijan | Thinking skills assessments for high-stakes selection
Paul Crump, Assessment Group Manager
The presentation focuses on a paper where we examine the use of critical thinking and problem solving tasks as a basis for admissions decisions onto highly-selective courses, with specific reference to the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) and Section 1 of the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT). As well as describing the sub-skills that may be considered as part of a thinking skills construct, the paper also examines what data can tell us about the validity of such tests, and outline the rationale behind an ongoing project to revise TSA and BMAT.
E ATP 2019, Madrid, Spain | Creating inclusivity in entrance assessments
Aaron Mortlock, Business Development Manager
Pat Harkin, Former Deputy Director of Admissions, Leeds Medical School
Identifying the right applicants for your institution can be challenging. You want to be sure that you are making fair decisions and giving all applicants the same opportunity to show their potential, regardless of their background. In this session, we looked at how Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing has worked in close partnership with institutions to develop and deliver inclusive selection tests. We shared specific case studies that illustrate our approach, such as the development and delivery of tests in three languages in Central Asia, remote proctoring in the second most populated country in the world, support the internationalisation objectives of universities, and our provision of free and accessible preparation materials for candidates.
