You will take the test on your own computer at home or at another suitable location. The test will be monitored by a remote Proctor. You will receive detailed guidance about this before the test date. For general tips and advice, see below:

Before the test day

A link to complete a system check will be sent to you on 9 February. It is very important that you complete the system check to avoid any technical issues on the test date.

Please also ensure you read the Candidate Remote Proctor Instructions, which you should have received by email, in advance of the test day.

You will receive your live test link within 72 hours of the test date.

Please use the computer-based demonstration test and the instructions to familiarise yourself with the functionality of BMAT in computer-based format. Please note that this link is for the demonstration test only – it will not include any approved access arrangements (e.g. extra time) nor will it be marked or proctored.

If you do not complete these checks then you may encounter technical issues on the test day.

What to bring to the test

You must bring valid photographic identification to the test (passport, driving licence or provisional driving licence, or student ID).

Make sure you bring the equipment you need:

  • Blank rough paper for workings and a pen or pencil. The proctor may request to see the paper you will be using.

Dictionaries (including bilingual dictionaries) and calculators are not allowed.

Do not bring food or drink into the test room unless an access arrangement has been applied for and approved. A clear bottle of water with any labels removed is allowed.

During the test

You must not bring your mobile phone or any other electronic devices into the room where you will be taking the test, apart from your laptop or desktop PC that you will be using.

Each section of the test is completed one after the other. Based on the time given for each section the system will move you on from one section to the other. You cannot use the time from one section for another.

If you have any questions, need help or want to leave the room, let the proctor know via the chat.

Access Arrangements

If you applied for access arrangements due to a disability or special requirement, adjustments will be made for you on the day of your test. For example, if you were granted 25% extra time, this will be automatically set up for you in the test player. If it was approved for you to have food or a glucose monitor, the proctor will be made aware.

At the end of the test

Your test will finish automatically when your time is up.

If the allocated time expires before you have finished the test manually, the test will timeout and all answers saved will be submitted.

If you wish to complete the test before the allocated time expires, select Finish. Your answers will be submitted and you will not be able to return to the test.

If you have any questions or problems with submitting your responses, tell the proctor immediately.

After the test

Find out when your results will be released, how to access them and how to share them with your chosen universities by visiting the BMAT – February results page.

You can request Special Consideration if you experienced issues on the test day such as:

  • you suffered temporary illness, injury or indisposition at the time of the test
  • there were problems with the administration of the test, such as access arrangements that you requested upon registration not being made available.

You will need to complete an online form within five working days of the test day for us to inform your universities of any special consideration.

For more information about our policies and processes and to access the form, please visit our Customer Support Site.

Have you got more questions? See below

Is extra time allowed for learners without English as their first language?

Who do I contact if I have technical issues on the test day?
