This October, Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing is celebrating 15 years of the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT).
BMAT is used by universities around the world to select applicants for medical, dental and biomedical courses. It tests key skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and application of scientific knowledge that are crucial for success on an academically demanding, science-based degree.
BMAT was produced in response to the challenge that many medical schools face: how to compare applicants, who appear similar on paper, in a fair and transparent way? Designed in collaboration with world-leading universities, BMAT helps admissions tutors make objective selection decisions.
Andy Chamberlain, Head of Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, explains: ‘BMAT helps medical schools ensure a fair selection, and differentiate between applicants who are very strong on paper and have similar qualifications.’
Established in 2003, BMAT was originally used by three UK universities: the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and University College London.
Since that time, the use of BMAT has grown in the UK to Imperial College London, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the University of Leeds and Lancaster University, but also, internationally. It is now used by more than 30 universities, in 11 countries including Thailand, Poland, Romania and Malaysia.
BMAT has evolved over the years and we continue to work collaboratively with universities to support them with their selection process.
BMAT supports widening participation by striving for fairness and transparency, giving every applicant the opportunity to prove their potential. Our global network of test centres lets applicants take BMAT in their own country. Focusing on the skills crucial for success, BMAT identifies applicants who will thrive on a medical course.
We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the success of BMAT over the last 15 years and we look forward to the next 15!
